I used to write the timing systems for Orienteering events, so all our
harware HAD to be __VERY__ rugged. We got a NEC Versa laptop, and after
5 years of being dropped, kicked, squashed and repeatedly being filled
with dust, it still works. Replaced the keyboard (and yes, it was
possibly to get as a seperate item) once because the backspace key got
sticky. ;-)
Toshiba seem to be OK, but I never treated it as badly as the NEC.
Where I work now, we've got 25 laptops called "FirstLite". Avoid them
like the plague. These have all been back for warranty repair at least
twice (up to 7 times) each. Usually motherboard had been cooked.
Usually took two to three months to get repaired. ;-(
IBM laptops are nice and thin/rugged, but b****y expensive. Personally,
I'm going to get one of those Toshiba Libretto notebooks and a
PalmPilot of some sort... anyone know prices/recommends on how
much/where to get PP's?
