Well if he has a Makefile.in then I think the answer to your first
question is obvious :).  Yes Makefile.in is just a template, but people
shouldn't be too afraid of editing it.  configure.in is blackmagic, but
Makefile.in is only a step above a normal Makefile, and is easy to modify.

Just think of it as a Makefile with lots of Macro's.  (The macros are
defined by the ./configure script).

If configure.in has been configured to accept --use-shadow-passwords (it
should).  Otherwise go digging in the Makefile produced by ./configure and
modify the compile line.
