[H-GEN] customizing X

Hi

I dropped this line into my ~/.Xclients file to display a nice
background:
xv -root -maxpect -quit /path/file &
which works fine at the 8bpp default.

However, when I edited my /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers file to read
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -bpp 16 
to give default 16bpp, xv starts up, the image displays, the cursor
flashes a few more times and the background returns to the default
green.
If I boot to run level 3(I usually boot directly into X) and use startx
-- -bpp 16 the same results.
If I issue xv -root -maxpect -quit /path/file & at the command line, the
image displays correctly at 16bpp.
I added the xv... line to ~/.xinitrc instead of ~/.Xclients but the
result was the same.
I'm not sure what's going on...
