See Brent's post for what is probably the right fix, but if you'd rather
solve the symptom than the underlying cause, you could do something like...

] # cd /etc/init.d
] # vi amd
] ... look for the bit where it actually starts the daemon.
] ... add a "&" to the end of that line
] ... save. exit.
] # cd

With appropriate modifications to suit RedHat rather than Debian 
[/etc/rc.d/init.d, for example].

At a tangent, there were some suggestions to make "load the daemon in
the background and don't wait for it to get settled before getting on
with stuff" policy standard for Debian a while ago.  Don't think anything
came of it, though.
