Well is there a file somehwere libg77.* ? If so, then add in -Lpath to
the start of your option list where path is the directory where it is.
Try g77 -v alchemy.o ... to get more details as to where it is looking
already.

Your probably didn't want to hear this...but there looks like there is
an rpm for what you want.
ftp://ftp.redhat.yourmirror/pub/redhat/redhat-5.1/i386/RedHat/RPMS/egcs-g77-1.0.2-8.i386.rpm
Wouldn't just using rpm to install that magically do everything ? Note
that I'm not a RH person and maybe the obvious interpretation of that
file name isn't correct. It probably goes with the othe file in the
same path called egcs-1.0.2-8.i386.rpm
