[H-GEN] xdm login on sparc

I have a problem with xdm on the sparc.  When I try to log in as 
anybody (root included) I'm told "access denied".  This happens from 
the terminal and not just remotely.

I've been running X quite successfully, but only after I'm already 
logged in (i.e. I'm using startx).  I wanted to run a program in a 
remote session when I ran into this problem.  Has anyone heard of 
this before?  Is there perhaps some permissions which haven't been 
set?

I find it very confusing as RedHat Linux on a PC is very well behaved 
in this regard, and I really expected no difference.  (how naive of 
me  :)
