Thanks Bruce, you almost got it.  configure runs awfully slowly on
this machine (as does everything else) and I nabbed (and compiled)
GNU make after I noticed it whining about it not being installed.  I
reran configure, and failed to notice that configure had failed to
notice that GNU make was installed now.  I mean, really, what is the
fscking use of having a cache, if you don't use it?

Turns out that GNU make did not like the options being used by BSD
make (shock horror!  A GNU program that's not backward compatible?
Incredible!).

/me swears at GNU and RMS in particular.  Oh.  Wrong medium.  :)

Solution : configure --with-gnu-make, or some such.
