If using ESMTP, when the message From and To is attempted (the transaction
usually goes:

MAIL FROM: <jo.blow at somewhere> SIZE=3463456

This is dependent on the remote mta though.

Sendmail, at least, will never drop a message short of diskspace/hardware
failure.

This is based on sendmail/qmail/exim/smail settings, other is... well,
does it follow any recognisable standard? ;)
