They are aware, they think it sucks too.
Its currently being replaced by apt which when completed will look really cool,
have X and text interfaces, and be intelligent (well, at least more so than dselect)
Currently only the command line interface is really usable, but
last I heard (I've been off the debian lists for a while)
they were hoping to have it included in debian 2.1
