That does sound like it's fine.

Yes, you can. I'm not sure why ifconfig doesn't say what the mru is
(I suppose because it doesn't matter for programs on this computer,
only for those on the one you're connected to), but pppd has an
argument "mru <value>" (value defaults to 1500, according to pppd(1)),
and I believe it reports it to /var/log/debug in debug mode.

That seems dodgy.

Did Robert's suggestion wrt asyncmap help?

Otherwise, my pppd options are:

] asyncmap 0
] crtscts
] mru 1500
] mtu 1005
] proxyarp
] lock
] modem
] lcp-echo-interval 30
] lcp-echo-failure 8
] lcp-max-configure 20
] ipcp-accept-local
] ipcp-accept-remote

The first five are the only ones I'd see as likely to cause problems.

It might be worth posting the [LCP ConfReq ...] lines from the debug
output of pppd. Mine are something like:

] Sep 23 06:10:38 azure pppd[5113]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <mru 296>
   <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0x223cb5e7> <pcomp> <accomp>]
