In practice the 4x compression is rarely achived, so this is not a huge
problem, except for speeds above 28k

Could be involved with mtu path discovery perhaps.  I seem to remember
something about using the mru if it is lower than the remote mtu.  I might
be wrong here.

Do you have asyncmap 0 set for pppd?  This ensure it passes everything
through and doesn't try to esc anything.
