Okay---you've got free ram, and the machine is still slow? The
something must be chewing up all that processor time (well, duh...
:) so if you're not running anything special...

It's a shame[1] that there is no `time'-like utility to tell how much
cpu-time a process has been taking up, without acutally having it
exit. What about if you killed off all the processes one by one,
until the machine sped up again (if indeed it ever does)?

Ummmm. Did you get your programs from a trusted source? Could there
be some sneaky DoS attack going on? :) :) It would be really cool
if you could see just how much ram and time all these processes were
using---maybe there is something in /proc that will do that?

While these suggestions aren't terribly helpful, I find that being
cross at someone's silly suggestions helps to get your creative juices
going. :) And anyway, no-one else seems to have suggestions...

Time for me to be quiet. :)

[1] : If there *is* a util like this one, then the shame is on me. :)
