Hmm.. possible - its a vanilla install of RedHat 4.2 - are there any known
bugs with chat?

And this machine did actually have ram free.. and wasn't swapping..

Well, as I said, we weren't swapping.  There's gettys, a couple copies of
bash.. normal stuff.. the box usually runs about 12 processes - its been
stripped pretty darn hard.
