As Bruce said some more info would be nice here. What happens if you
try telnetting to localhost and student.uq.edu.au as both root and a
normal user, for example?
Does:
$ echo hello > test.txt
$ lynx test.txt
work? (it should come up with lynx and just "hello" at the top left)
