[H-ADMIN] Steve McLevie difficulty subscribing to lists

Hi Sysadmins and Exec,

Steve McLevie <swmcl at internode.on.net> has apparently being trying to
subscribe to one or more of our lists, without success. Eventually, he
followed the advice given on http://lists.humbug.org.au/mailman/listinfo
which says "If you are having trouble using the lists, please contact
mailman at lists.humbug.org.au."

That address ends up in the unadvertised Mailman mailing list, which has no
subscribers. I noticed it because I saw a request to approve his message.
To save you from digging it out, here is the content:

Hi,

I've tried to join these lists over recent days and haven't heard
anything. Am I to expect something in my inbox ?

Thanks,

Steve

I don't know what he did, because I just tried to subscribe to General and
the expected sequence happened: I got an email asking me to confirm my
subscription request, which I did. Then I got an email as a moderator
asking me to approve the subscription, so I approved it. The new subscriber
appeared in the list of subscribers, and I got notified as general-owner
and as my new identity I got the positively awful (and probably incorrect
in many details) "Welcome to the "General" mailing list" email.

Things to do:

1. Somebody who feels up to it should write to Steve and try to walk him
through subscribing to General and Announce.

2. Somebody who knows how to get to it needs to modify
http://lists.humbug.org.au/mailman/listinfo to tell people in trouble to
write to a more useful address, maybe admin at .

3. The sysadmins and exec should sit down at the next meeting to fix up the
wording and formatting of the welcome to General thing so that it actually
does a decent job. I'm happy to be part of that.
