OK, so what trigged it is the VM is running very, very slowly.  The
backup process wasn't running amok, it just wasn't finishing before the
next one is due to start.  (Fortunately it checks, so it didn't really
cause a problem other than emails to sasig.)

I rebooted it using "sudo reboot -f" (which is just 2 kernel calls -
sync() followed by its namesake, so the issue you had can't happen).
That seemed to work just fine, apart from it taking 20 minutes to boot
rather than 1.  Well that and the ensuing panic until I realised what
was going on.

So I've submitted a ticket to Crissic.  For future reference, you could
do that too. The responses from the account do go to exec at humbug.org.au
but you can set up sub-contacts and you can authorise them to raise
tickets.  I've created one for myself.  It would be nice if you did the
same.
