I'm possibly a little more familiar with LDAP - my ldap tutorial is
the #1 hit on Google for the term, and I get around 10k hits a month
on it. I'd suggest we start with something simple to get started -
its easy enough to move to another LDAP server if we do it correctly.
I'm happy with whatever Russell and Stephen decide if thats the way
we're going - they're in a more official position to make the
decision.

Definately. Start small, scale out from there.
