I don't understand.  It doesn't require you to use a Google App domain.
(I presume you are taking about something like this:
http://www.google.com/a/cpanel/domain/new.)  You can use any email
address.  Obviously email address has to have a google account, as
google has to be able to authenticate you before they allow access to
the document.

The russell-google bit in the email address is there because I tend to
use different email addresses for each organisation I deal with.  I
started doing that to keep track of who leaks my email address.  It is
not such a problem now, although I did use the technique to report an
Australian spammer to the ACMA on Friday.
