I'm not sure you can generalise like that on a sample size of one. I have an XPS-17 that I run windows on. I have a toolchain that I use for video editing and conversion of TV shows that is windows based. :-( As a result it is often running flat out (CPU) for 2-8 hours at a time. No overheating problems have existed with it in the last 4-5 years (not sure exactly how old it is now.) To be fair it is more of a mobile desktop than a laptop as due to its weight carting it around is tiring, however due to its all in one form factor it is easy to move off the dining table quickly. I'm cranky they stopped doing an XPS-17.

I could equally well say that HP notebooks are crap because I have personal experience with 3 different models that have overheated. I won't do that because they were older models and not really relevant to what is available now - which I have no experience with. Sample size is only 3 so too small.

There is a huge range of specs available in a laptop form factor these days. Working for CSIRO and seeing our large Dell and Apple fleet of notebook computers and how they perform, I am happy with the quality of the Dell Latitude range. You can't always get the specs you want in the Latitude range, so I'd also look at XPS and Precision. I have used the Dell outlet to buy refurbished latitude notebooks for my kids. Both of them have exceeded my expectations. Apple is also OK, but I would not buy one for other non-technical reasons.

Cheers,

Greg
