The two share a common ancestor(s), and share code these days, but
they're pretty different. FreeBSD concentrates on making things
perform well for i386, while NetBSD's aim seems to be `run on as many
platforms as possible'.

Also it's important to remember OpenBSD, which forked from NetBSD
(IIRC) some years ago to concentrate on security review and crypto.

The system approach is almost the same across the board.

When I last ran NetBSD it ran on about two dozen platforms. It's
almost doubled now (at 46). I like software that runs on more than
one platform; dealing with (say) endianness in a way that doesn't
destroy system performance forces the programmer to write good code.

If I'd had a tape drive of my own (HINT, HINT) I'd have run The HURD.
