If you're interested in a constantly moving target that is
riddled with security bugs and (especially in the latest
incarnation) with plain bugs, then BIND is the perfect choice.

If you'd like something light weight, reliable, secure and not

And be aware that this topic produces a lot of heat in some of
the people with opinions, but most of that is nonsense.  By all
means, play with one or more DNS implementations -- it's pretty
simple to setup and use either of those mentioned above.
