     Hello Charles,
The idea behind LFS is that starting
from an existing linux system,( you need existing
compilers and linkers etc.) you download their pkgs.
and create a new Linux native partition to install LFS
on. You end up compiling the whole system from
source and writing all the system scripts.
The whole base system fits in
100 MB and they say you can get an embedded
system running Apache in about 8 MB.

    http://www.au.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/intro.shtml

They have an FTP site at

       ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com

On the website there is a downloadable book
which explains the idea and helps you through the
installation.
                                         Hope this helps,
                                                  John Duncan
