Hi All.
A belated re-reply.
Acutally the poblem is that with the communic8 home system which telstra 
offers there is no dial tone. So I'm trying to work out how to make 
wvdial ignore that fact.  So I need to put the carrier = no entry in the 
dialer default default code bracket something like what follows below.

[Modem0]
Modem = /dev/ttyS0
Baud = 230400
Init1 = ATZ
SetVolume = 1
Dial Command = ATDT
Init4 = ATM1L3

[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyS0
Baud = 230400
Init1 = ATZ
SetVolume = 1
Dial Command = ATDT
Init4 = ATM1L3
Carrier = no  (May be the word check needs to be added 
too!)***************************

[Dialer Brisnet]

Username = username at isp.org.au
Password = XXXXXXXX
Phone = xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx#
Inherits = Dialer Defaults

Stupid mode = 0
