Yup. At about the same time there was also WN. I mention this not
because it was the "most popular", but at the time I believe it was the
most popular GPLed web server. Obviously, Apache overtook it in this
regard.
It used to perform quite favourably against the other servers of the day
(though I don't know how it would rate now). I know it was considered to
be reasonably secure in comparison to some of its competitors as well.
