Very true.  It is possible to buy a commercial X server for Linux (several
actually ;) that make the process easier.

One of the great things about the X config is that you can configure
multiple monitors & video cards in the one file and just uncomment the
ones you intend to use.

In this way you can try to keep one XF86Config file for all of your
monitors & cards - making life easier when you mix & match.

Likewise if you took a box to a friend's house & had a different monitor
there you could setup a monitor entry in the XF86Config file to use
whenever you go back.
