I've had plenty of systems over the years that have had failed
power supply fans and still run, and one that failed in a VERY dramatic way.
The failure was a dual Pentium Pro box, with 4 hard drives, a 3dfx Voodoo, and
three housemates attacking it while I was running a voodoo screensaver, on a
40 degree day. It also had a very closed case that didn't allow air flow unless
the power supply fan was running. Melted plastic facica is rather neat :)
I'm basing my comments on the fact that there are dozens of devices aroudn the home
that run fine without power supply fans, and have far higher wattage ratings
than a PC supply.
You'd obviously need to cut an air grill into the side of the PC case and
supply. I have a spare supply downstairs, that when I get the chance I'm
planning to modify.
