Yes I have as a matter of fact :)
My home server, blake, developed dead power supply fan syndrome. Until I
was able to get it fixed [1] the box would run for about 20-30 minutes or
so before crashing (a bit longer at night). This is a K6-233 in a
mid-tower case which had a single HD at the time (ie, the box should not
have excessive heat problems).
I believe the biggest contributors to heat in the case would be number of
hard drives and size of the case. I doubt the cpu or ram would generate
as much heat as a running harddrive.
[1] I went for a new power suppy as this box runs 24/7 and I felt safer
getting a full new unit.

Indeed :)
Regretably my experiements were negative :)
It was about a day & a half before I got the chance to replace the power
supply. In that time I would run the box up, watch it closely, grab my
mail and then shut it down :)
