Haven't been to a Humbug meeting yet but will probably be coming in =
the soon. I've just finished my IT degree and I have decided its time to =
build my linux box. I am looking at using Debian (thanks to Rob =
Brockway), thats fine, what I need is a machine to run it on. My =
question is how much would you guys be prepared to pay for a low end =
pentium (say p200 or under) ?

I have been setting up an auction for a company. About 100 computers =
mostly P166 with 64 Mb RAM, Matrox video cards, 3COM 10/100 network =
cards, Sony CD 2-3 Gb HDD's many with 17" monitors. These are very nice =
machines...ASUS motherboards. I have suggested they might get around =
$250-300 for the 15" monitor machines and a bit more for the 17" (mostly =
Samsung 700, Compaq S700 or some Digital Sony screens).
   =20
However, I think a new box is better value, say Celeron 850 or Duron =
850, 20 Gb HDD, 128 Mb RAM, 52X CDsound, speakers etc about $650 without =
a monitor...you get all new gear, a warranty, much bigger capacity and =
speed. If dollars are a significant barrier go with the used stuff but =
if you can afford a bit more the new stuff is really good value at this =
time.
   =20
If you are interested I have a Super 7 socket box with and AMD =
(running at 366 MHZ coz I can't get the manual and I can't be bothered =
playing with it) that I will soon be done with - 20 Gb HDD, 256 Mb =
SDRAM, 52X CDROM, 15" Samsung monitor...most of the parts are new.
