I had a similar problem with RH7.1 with a 16meg 100mhz 586.  Apparently RH's 
installer is written in Python and has the associated overhead.  I'm no 
expert in these matters but hve been told that you need at least 32meg it 
have the installer run.

My 586 is now being used for my building a distro from scratch project.
