Hello.

lpd is a bad, bad program. It doesn't cope with the system being in a 
states it doesn't like, and isn't good at telling you why it doesn't like 
them. The lpc program might help you; run it as root and use commands like 
"status" and "restart" to get a look at things and get them going again. 
Log files might give you some insight. I think the last time I was having 
problems with lpd it was a failure to reverse-lookup my hostname's IP...
