[ Humbug *General* list - semi-serious discussions about Humbug and ]
[ Unix-related topics.  Please observe the list's charter.           ]
[ Worthwhile understanding: http://www.humbug.org.au/netiquette.html ]

Well, I have had a most frustrating couple of days. I'm trying to buy a
discman style MP3 player that takes CDRs with MP3s burnt onto them.
<rant>
I must say that living in Australia sometimes has it's down side. There are
now many of these devices on the market overseas however the local market
really really really sucks.

I have rung around all the audio shops I can find in Brisbane and very few
of them have these devices and those that have semi decent ones want a
ridiculous price. For example, Videopro has a nice Philips unit that would
be ideal (http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/electronics/57d5.shtml).  Note the
price... $US99. Videopro quoted me $AU479 for what I think is the same
unit!!! [3]. Also note the "We cannot ship this unit outside of the U.S."
bit... that sucks.

I ended up going to Strathfield in the city and bought the unit there they
had for $249. Looked OK and worked OK and sounded OK in the shop, although
the amount of noise in these places doesn't make for a good listening test.
Got back to the office and had a bit more of a play. It sounds bloody
awful. The unit is a NAPA DAV311. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT ever buy one.
They are crap. There is really bad harmonic distortion in the audio which I
was unable to hear in the shop. I rang them and they have agreed to refund
my money.
</rant>
*sigh*

Anyone know of a decent unit at a reasonable price that can be purchased in
Australia? I was in a bit of a hurry to get one today [1] as my wife is
having the 2 little people growing inside her removed on Friday[2]. That
kinda backfired so we will be resorting to borrowing a portable CD player
from her parents for the duration

OK, that's enough, I feel somewhat less stressed now....

Cheers
Michael

[1] hence the purchase without prior research of that model... which when I
did it later very quickly indicated the problem is quite widespread
[2] EEEEEK !!!!!
[3] not 100% certain as the sales drone didn't know the part number, but
Philips don't make too many different models
