um, the startup screen is displayed as windows loads. so it has to be a
certain width and height, and windows will only display the startup screen
in 640x480 regardless of what your actual desktop resolution is. it also
restricts the amount of colours to 256 which is quite a shame too.

To get this back to *nix related, does anyone know how to change the gnome
1.4 splash screen? I'd love to put a custom one of those in. Make linux
feel a bit more 'homey' :-) I'm also curious if anyone has run into the
'disappearing desktop background' problem. I had an issue a few months back
with gnome loading a black screen instead of the picture i'd asked it to.
when i went to restore it, it was still set on the picture. the drive was
mounted on startup so it had access to the file....just wondering if anyone
else experienced that as well. i haven't been in gnome long enough lately
to test if it still does it, although i suspect it has low bugfix priority.

Sandra.
