I think I'll try the Android app and see how that goes first but
clamshell sounds like a good way to go (USB bluetooth dongle for the pi?)

Me too - on my tv the second hdmi slot and usb are next to each other so
makes it easier. My only worry is forgetting to shutdown pi before
turning the tv off.
