Ah yes, I've been so close to just getting a HP Microserver just for the hell of it (they're cheap!).

Something that may be worth considering is one of these ARM based Android devices (powerful media devices. Raspberry Pi doesn't compare.) that are flooding sides such as Deal Extreme (http://dealextreme.com) for under $100. There is an Android port of XBMC these days and I hear it is possible to get a TV tuner working under Android. A Google search suggests getting a TV tuner to work under Android is pretty much the same as Linux - see https://github.com/chrulri/droidtv#readme and it is worth noting that many Chinese phones have TV tuners (OK, they *all* have TV tuners - they're obsessed).

Separating your front-end from back allows you to keep your data storage separate which means you could use some simple out of the box NAS or a roll-your-own system (I suggest the HP Microserver) for all your data. If a USB HDD is what you want then I guess that could work too.
