[H-GEN] Nicest way to maintain mac-IP-DNS mappings on local network?

Hello,

I've got a bog standard home network setup: an el-cheapo Netgear ADSL
modem, a Linux box running my file server and various network services, and
a bunch of mixed clients, including macs, windows PCs, smartphones and the
usual gaggle of IP-aware gadgets.

Only now have can I be arsed to finally sort out some routine network
maintenance tasks, which I've managed to keep kicking into the long grass
until now. I want to set up a DNS zone, but want to arrange things, so that
I can maintain the MAC-IP-DNS mappings in a clean way so I don't have to
keep cross-checking two separate configuration files.

I've used the DHCP server running on the modem to dish out static IPs to
all my devices based on MAC address, which is a bit of a nuisance to
maintain -- I'm wondering if it would be easier to somehow set up a bind9
and dhcp server on the Debian server to manage the MAC address-to-IP-to-DNS
for my local network in the one location.

What's the best practice for doing that for a home network these days?

Cheers, Ben.
