The cheapest provider I could find, which naturally wasn't in Australia.

(you need to fill in the form and click "Checkout" to see the actual
price.)

However, Australian providers aren't that bad. The deal I got involved
waiting around for a 1 off special. If you don't do that Linode's
$20/month price is not atypical. By comparison RansomIT is/was offering
$20/quarter for small VPS in Australia.

That isn't a one off. Exigent charges $25/month for something slightly
bigger than Linode offers for $20/month:

Crucial offers a $12.75/month for a smaller one:

If I was worried about performance in serving Australian's, where low
latency to Australian's is a priority (eg setting up a shop front for a
small store) I would be going with something like that. I will probably
do that one day for the firm I work for. The premium going local simply
isn't that big.
But as it is my I will be using the VPS mainly to talk to overseas
sites. In that case not only is it cheaper, the links to Europe and the
US are much faster.
