Keeping current and getting fresh defaults can IMHO be achieved with a
fresh install once in a while. Running Fedora I tend to upgrade one
or two point releases then on the next do a fresh install. Copy
configs from backups as I miss them.

Kickstart is handy in this regard (esp. with a local pxe server),
being able to create a minimal install or customize it the way you
want, though for only a couple of systems it's probably harder to
justify the efforts required to get up to speed on it.
