Horatio,
+1 for Thinkpads just working and they're always my first recommendation as
well. There is a new project that might give you a bit more choice if you
were interested that I'm not sure a lot of people are aware of yet.
Canonical has been working with manufacturers to certify laptops, desktops,
servers and netbooks recently, the results are available at
http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/ and might be worth a quick look.
I just wish places like http://www.system76.com/ would ship to Australia and
would make decisions so easy.
