I just (finally) got around to doing this. I tried the Debian CD option
first. This would have worked, only the .iso I had on hand was for lenny
and it was apparently too out-of-date to cope with ext4.
A newer netinstall CD would have worked, but I decided to try gparted
just to try something new. This fixed the problem instantly. Seems a
great live CD, and certainly came in useful here.
Thanks again to all for the suggestions.
Now I just need to figure out how to upgrade to the newest version of
Ubuntu. The GUI method isn't working, so I suspect I'll go back to using
CLI tools...
