I'm shocked. Most 3G devices have better GNU/Linux support than windows.

On my fedora machine, most huewei modems will simply present a new menu option
in my networkmanager system tray icon's menu. 'Auto Wireless Modem' or
something it's called.

there's a similar program to the usb_modeswitch program that's used by 
NetworkManager and is triggered on device insert, and it should be already
installed.

What distribution, kernel and desktop are you currently running? Are you
using NetworkManager?
