i use mythtv to record from my satellite boxes, i have a hdpvr on each one
that captures 1080i analog signal from toe component output of the satellite
box. its kinda fragile. there are some states the satellite box gets in that
require me to pick up the satellite remote and do things. i am in the US but
it should work fine for foxtel or optus or any satellite provider. you will
need to have a box from them still. however you have more fredom than using a
commercial dvr. sinvce you have access to the un-encrypted video
another option is to use analog capture cards and record the analog stream.
if you dont cre for hd this is a little simpler. but there is no way to record
cable off the wire. in Oz the encrypt everything. I can get the ota channels
in hd here over cable with a hd tuner card. and the analog channels that are
unencrypted. however foxtel has always encrypted everything. there is no
way to pull that.
