Our HP DL380 G6 with 24GB RAM, 4 * 146 GB 10K SAS, 4 * 300GB 10K SATA
and a single E5530 CPU is about as close to silent as I've ever heard a
serious server. It, too, is a 2RU server. Including the fan in each of
the redundant PSUs, there's currently 6 active fans in this server. We
have a similar server in a client site, however with 2 * E5530 CPUs and
8 * fans and it is equally silent - if you're not logged into it and are
standing in the server room, the only way you'd know it was powered up
is to look at the lights on the front of it! :)
