On some sites, I make a user account with a throwaway password. On other
sites I click the 'google.com' or 'yahoo.com' openid buttons and that
logs me in.

I guess I approach this from a user experience point of view.

Stackoverflow.com is a site that handles openid well. If you want to
learn how openid should feel from a user point of view, make an account
there and have a fiddle.
