The main reason for the firewire is that part of the spec for the lca (yep I kow we're talking about Humbug here) is that we want streaming video. That might be able to be achieved using the HDMI output but.

Lack of tape noise would however be a really good thing. Never really thought about that. The real issue however is as you said the mic input. That's a real show stopper.

G'day Matt,

Yes, I can *definitely* understand the need for a mic input, however Firewire I'm not so sure about. These (and a lot of current SD/HD handycams) record to SDHC card, so to get the 64 GB of video into the computer, just use an SDHC card reader and you don't need the firewire. You also don't get tape noise, issues with drives (tape/HDD/DVD) and ultimately, the cameras are a lot more robust because of it.

That still leaves the lack of a mic input as a showstopper, however.

Regards,
Hilton Travis

It looks very good for the price but after taking a careful look at the specs I note a couple of things missing that we would really want in a camera. Firewire and microphone input. These two are kinda important for what we are looking for.

Good price through.

To me, the purchase of a video camera does seem like it would be a
good idea. It wouldn't be wasted after LCA, it could be used to film
talks given at regular HUMBUG meetings which could then be made
available on the internet. This assumes HUMBUG starts having at least
semi-regular talks, though. Matt has collected some quotes for purchasing the A/V equipment for LCA
2011 outright verses renting it. Matt says the prices are in the same
ball park. If they are with 50% or so I'd say purchasing them is a very
good idea. However it ain't our money we are playing with there, so we
would have to run it past Linux Australian. That said, I suspect if we
won Linux Australia would accept whatever we put up in our bid.

I don't think Greg is talking about that though. Matt (who should put
his 2c in here anyway), is proposing Humbug purchase some A/V equipment.
This would cost a substantial fraction of Humbug's current bank account
balance. My confusion, then. I assumed that the video equipment purchased for
HUMBUG would be the same as the video equipment purchased for LCA.

Given that HUMBUG has to purchase video equipment for LCA, and that
funding for this is pretty much a given, would it be possible for
HUMBUG to keep hold of it after LCA?

gavin, G'day Guys,

Have a look at www.kogan.com.au and see what they have available. A
1808p HD handycam at $369. Sure, it may not be the same build quality
as a $1500 Canon unit of *extremely* similar specifications, but at the
price, and if treated well, I can't see this being a bad investment (if
the investment is needed) even with the $99 for a 5 year extended
warranty option.
