Hi,
I, Matthew Franklin, would like to nominate myself for the position of Secretary.

== Election Spiel ==

Over the last year as Librarian I have learned what it takes to be on the Exec. I
have set up, with President James's help, room bookings and I have been a hard
worker on the Exec. Not only have I done purely Exec duties but I have also taken
on the responsibility of Event Coordinator and Talks Liaison.

To this end I have managed to video tape a couple of talks and encourage people to
stand up and give talks. I have also set up a couple of small events. Have
participated in a membership drive with Russell. I have tried to encourage new
members.

I regulary maintain the HUMBUG website making sure that meeting times and places
are kept up to date and that any new information is added as soon as I know.
I am also involved in the LCA bid as well.

To this end the reason for my nomination is that I want to improve and expand on
what I have already done.

=== Aims ===
My aims are simple.

 * Increase Membership numbers: I want to improve membership numbers. It doesn't
matter where they come from or what they know. I would like HUMBUG to remain a
place where anyone feels welcomed. Whether that be experienced people that have
worked in the industry to those hobbiest people that are new to Unix.

 * Support UQ: I feel that we as a club need to show that as UQ has helped and
supported us we want to help and support UQ. We can do this by having a stand at
UQ's open day and give out free Open CD's. Also we if we can help out young IT
students learn about Unix that will help show that we deserve to be apart of UQ.

 * Show that we are an active club: I want our website to show that as a club we
have a firm knowledge base. That we are an active club. I want people to feel that
they can post Unix and fun stuff on the web. It is also important that the website
helps maintain the website and the club. By this I mean that the way we have set up
the website is on the website as well as the way the club works. This should be
available for anyone to see.

 * As Open as possible: I want as much of what we do as a club to be as open to the
public as possible. Russell's excellent backup system has really opened my eyes.
I would like to encourage members to get a copy and find out how good a system can
be set up. For even non-members to walk in and feel it's okay to muck around with
the server. The new great looking HUMBUG logo is the way it is because of that very
reason.

 * Protect people's privacy: The club is made up of individuals. We must respect
the privacy of those people. I want to only record what we need to know about
members for the database. To protect the knowledge that we do collect. I want to be
as open as possible but by the same token there is stuff that we need to protect.

 * Emergencies: We have been very fortunate that we have not had to deal with
emergencies at HUMBUG. I worry that our luck might change. Touch wood. To this end
I want to have a first aid kit and to have a record of first aiders. We might want
to send someone on a first aid course. Either way I feel that we need to be prepared.

 * Exec member equals hard worker: I want to put my full support behind Russell's idea
that the Exec members should take responsibility for the jobs that they have. To give
reports at Exec meetings. For those meeting to be a regular occurrence and not just
something that gets put off. To this end, as I have done this year, I say yes to being
a hard working member of the Exec and no to being a slack arse.

That's it folks.

Matthew Franklin. (Librarian)
