One way to get try out NetBSD (from the point of view of a user,  
rather than a sysadmin) would be to get an account on SDF Public  
Access Unix System. This runs NetBSD on DEC Alpha hardware.

Playing around with an ARPA or MetaARPA account[1] would give you a  
good basic idea of what the OS is like to use, without having to  
install it on your own machine. You can always do this later, if you  
decide you prefer it to GNU/Linux.
