Even if a website were specifically created to take whingers,
why should that site and not the individual whingers be liable
(assuming anyone should be liable at all) ?

Take a look at the recent beneficial changes to the laws for
defamation: http://www.efa.org.au/Issues/Censor/defamation.html
Specifically, "truth" is now a valid defence in Australia.
