Unless you're going to a battery backed up RAID card, no. The failure
modes for both are the same, they just move from one location to
another.

I use the RAID assist card on my home PC's motherboard as a series of
extra ports and it works fine. Usually the controllers can be switched
between disk controller and RAID controller modes.
