I had some pain with a USB RaLink device about a year ago, I don't 
remember whether it was rt2400, rt2500 or something else. However I saw 
recently that the rt2x00 driver for those devices is in mainline, so you 
might consider running a more recent kernel, eg. 2.6.22 from Debian testing.
