It's called "Low Bandwidth X" or "LBX". The UQ ITEE Web site still
hosts a how-to that I wrote about five years ago now: <http://
studenthelp.itee.uq.edu.au/remote/lbx.html>. (Second on Google for
"lbx"! Rock!)
However, Wikipedia says "LBX was disabled by default as of X.Org
Server 7.1, and will be removed outright from X.Org Server 7.2":
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_Bandwidth_X>. Apparently, the
change has already been checked in for X11R7.2: <http://wiki.x.org/
wiki/ChangesForX11R72>.
The official X.org line is "[t]he LBX protocol is generally
inadequate for modern X usage": <http://wiki.x.org/wiki/
XorgPerformance>. And since Keith Packard has that view, it's
probably reasonable: <http://keithp.com/~keithp/talks/lbxpost/
index.html>.
